Whistling go chinese characters doodling
February 6, 2010
A Chinese noble should be accomplished in the 4 fine arts of qin qi shu and hua aka Music, Wei qi (Igo, Go), Calligraphy and Painting. Wikipedia explains all:
Some might be surprised that the board game know in English as ‘Go‘ features in what is otherwise a respectable list of arts. What is it that qualified a game for inclusion in a list of 4? One can imagine Chinese nobles 2000 years ago were a rarefied we don’t piss around with children’s games or sully our spirits in any way kind of bunch.
The rules are dead simple, in essence you have stones, and you take it in turns to place them anywhere on the board. Your stones live or die and ‘influence’ empty areas of the board. And because of the stunning level of complexity, the best computers don’t stand a chance against good human Go players, who ‘feel’ the influence. Professional players are the Jedi of our times and wear robes to prove it.
But I digress, I think it’s really cool that this game in which you need feel to be really good gets recognition as an art and all that implies. You’ve got to give it a go to see what I mean.
Taking the sting out of whiskey
January 30, 2010
Hello world.
Whiskey is a fine drink. It can be subtle, smokey, vibrant and mellow, but it does burn on the way down. I recently discovered a way to take that heat and put it to a use more productive than inflaming my throat membranes.
This post was not meant to be about drink at all, but judge for yourself when you watch this video. What stands out most to you? Perhaps your attention is attracted most by the dashingly good looking young men and women. Who knows?
In any case my top tip is that whiskey is best served with a tad of cold water.
